Outdoor Furniture And The Environment

With today’s concerns about the carbon footprints we leave on Earth, there are even environmentally friendly options when it comes to buying outdoor furniture. Both traditional manufacturers and newer ones are getting on target with eco-friendly furnishings.

Teak has a long history for being expensive and popular for making outdoor furniture. It weathers beautifully, and lasts for years. Many of the major teak forests in Southeast Asia have been all but completely depleted. There are companies who are doing something about it. Only teak from sustainable forests is used by one outdoor furniture manufacturing company in Costa Rica. They give a portion of their profits back toward reforestation. While teak outdoor furniture is less of a bargain than ever, buying one is no longer going to destroy the eco-system.  Several outdoor furniture manufacturers have joined an organization called 1% For The Planet. It is an organization of corporations who donate 1% of their sales toward global environmental conservation. Most of their websites all display the organization’s logo, and you’ll notice it when shopping.

Other companies are designing chairs, tables and other outdoor items that are made with recycled plastics. Don’t think these are like the outdoor furniture you see at the big box stores either.  They are highly stylized and comfortable additions to the market. Recycled plastic turned into furniture may be as big as recycled plastic was to the invention of polar fleece! One terrific bonus to many of the pieces is that they don’t have to be stored in the winter. The tables and chairs are all low maintenance and continue to look great season after season. Recycled wrought iron is also becoming a popular new look. You’ll find hammocks made of recycled soda bottles and contemporary chairs made up of old staves from wine barrels. You’ll find it just as comfortable as the old rope style ones.

Recycled rubber products and ones made of polywood are both options as well. More durable and prettier than plywood, polywood is actually much like it in composition. The environment will hopefully be improved on some levels by the diligence and efforts of manufacturing companies who care. As for working with environmentally friendly furniture in decorating an outdoor space, you’ll be surprised. Rustic and hand hewn products are now being left in the dust!
